Maryland Highpoint - Backbone Mountain - 3360 ft
6 June 2005, 7:10 pm. Highpoint
#24.
Back to 2005 Northeast Highpoint Expedition
After hiking in the rain to the top of Mount Davis, PA, earlier in the day, I drove to the trailhead to the Maryland highpoint, and set out at 6:45. There was no rain here, but it was hot and very humid. I followed the orange blazed logging road to where the trail splits off to the left, then followed this to State Line marker #3, then to the summit at 7:10 pm. The mailbox at the top has a register as well as some highpoint certificates that you are now entitled to. I took a short break at the picnic table at the top, as a deer scattered, then returned to the trailhead. Most of the work is done by the time the trail splits off from the road. During the day, I passed from Ohio, to West Virginia, then Pennsylvania, West Virginia again, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Maryland and finally into West Virginia one last time. No wonder I was a little short on time!
