Some Walks Near Boulder

Brainard Lake and Indian Peaks Wilderness

I wanted to adjust to the altitude as soon as I could, so I headed out Saturday morning to the Brainard Lake area, to get some practice at 10,000 feet.  I was here a year ago in late May, and we couldn't even drive to the trailhead with six feet of  snow on the road, but the road was clear now.  There was snow on the trail, mostly pressed into slippery ice.  After a mile or two, the trail came out of the trees for a nice view of some of the Indian Peaks.  I was giving my winter clothes a good test, it was about 40 F with stiff gusts, but they passed the test, and it was a great view.  I didn't want to spend long on the trail today, as the Oklahoma football game had already started.  So, I headed back to the car and then to Boulder, and turned on the TV just in time to see the Longhorns fumble.  sigh...

Flatiron Mountains

Sunday was the day of the soccer game, but there was enough time in the morning to check out the Flatirons.  The Flatirons are a small set of mountains right next to Boulder, with a good set of popular hiking trails running through them.  There are lots of joggers on the trails, and some nice fall colors as well.
