Spring 2007 Game Recaps
Greta Carter, Kelsey Carpenter, and Leslie Imber each scored, while the Longhorn defense pitched a shutout, for a 3-0 win. Departing seniors Carrie Schmit (wearing #7) and Karen Haight did play some, while Caitlin Kennedy stayed on the bench, probably still rehabbing her knee from last seasons' MCL tear. Texas will get to face UTSA (who only started their program last year) in their first official game, in the coming fall season.
An originally scheduled game against Texas State at the San Marcos, TX (Bobcat Soccer Complex) was cancelled.
This game was planned to be at the Intramural Fields, but due to field conditions there, the game was moved to the usual soccer stadium. (Without notice on the UT website. April Fools!!) Texas put up 6 goals in the first half, against an outmatched Angelo State team, with Kelsey Carpenter, Emily Anderson, and Stephanie Gibson scoring the goals. Despite playing most of the second half on the Angelo State side of the field, the Longhorns were unable to add more points, partially by missing some easy chances. Kasey Moore came close, with several long range shots that just missed high, as well as a header on goal that was accidentally blocked by a Texas player. In the second half, the Longhorns used a new goalkeeper, Stef Connors, who has played for the UT club team. She will back up Dianna Pfenninger, who had been the only keeper still on the roster since Avery Allen has left the team. Stef didn't see much action in the half.
On a windy, somewhat cool, partly cloudy day, the Longhorns controlled the play en route to a 5-0 win over the Borreguitas from Monterrey Tech, played at the Whitaker Intramural Fields. Greta Carter just missed with a couple of shots early, but the first goal was scored by Stephanie Gibson, finishing off a corner kick, 15 minutes into the game. About halfway through the first half, Kelsey Carpenter added a second, with an entertaining strike that deflected off of a defender's head, then bounced high into the air, and over the Monterrey keeper into the net. Emily Anderson added a third goal for the half, after the Monterrey goalie dropped the ball right in front of her, just in front of the net, and Emily tapped it in. Monterrey didn't get much more of the play in the second half than they did in the first. Kelsey Carpenter had several nice runs through the defense, and added another goal 8 minutes into the second half, a shot that bounced along the ground and into the right side of the net. Monterrey gave Texas one last score, off an own goal, with 10 minutes left, which made the final score of 5-0. Stef Connors played most of the second half in goal for Texas, she is now backing up Dianna Pfenninger.
I heard rumors that Monterrey would like to have Texas visit them sometime, I think that would be cool. The Nuevo Leon state highpoint is nearby, and respectably over 12000 ft, although the poor state of Mexican geographic surveys confuse the issue of exactly where that highpoint is.
