Spring 2005 Game Recaps

Region III ODP

Seniors Kelly Wilson, getting ready to play for the national team in Portugal, and Kristen Teter both started, and some other seniors played also.  Stephanie Logterman also started, her first game in burnt orange, wearing number 11.  Kelsey Carpenter did much of the offensive work for Texas, with many breakaways through the defense during the game, but all of her chances in the first half were off, as were everybody else's, and the first half ended 0-0.  Eight minutes into the second half, Kelsey finally connected, receiving the ball with lots of space and blasting it past the keeper to put Texas up 1-0.  Nine minutes later, No. 6 for ODP was fouled in the penalty area, and the penalty kick was converted to tie the game at 1-1.  Twenty-five minutes in, ODP picked up a rebound off the Texas goalie and scored to make the score 1-2.  Carpenter soon answered, converting a play that developed off of a Texas corner kick to tie at 2-2.  Not much later, senior Alex Gagarin, playing as a forward, hit the crossbar, but then No. 6 for ODP came through with another play, beating the keeper to a loose ball and finishing to make the score 2-3  for ODP.  As time ran out, Texas sent in a dangerous corner kick, but it wasn't quite enough, and the game ended at 2-3.  Player of the game:  No. 6 for ODP.

This game was part of the Lonestar Girls Showdown, a tournament of mostly high school age club teams, along with some college teams, including this game.  All the games except this were at the T&C Sports Complex.

Ted's All-Stars

Texas took on Ted's All-Stars in the steady rain this evening, in front of a crowd of around 50.  The All-Stars looked like a pick-up team, dressed in white with black shorts, not all uniform and most without numbers.  The team had several ex-UT players (I think), some dressed in UT practice shirts, along with a few guys.  (Ted?)  I think I recognized Kati McBain, Vanessa Martinez and Darci Carruthers on the All-Stars, and there were probably more ex-Longhorns, but the rain kept me from using my binoculars, so I had a hard time recognizing faces to be sure.  In the first half, around 30 minutes in, Kelsey Carpenter got behind the defense and beat the goalie for a 1-0 Texas lead, and a few minutes later Kelsey added a second to make the score 2-0 at the half.  In the second half, both Caitlin Kennedy and Amy Burlingham had some decent chances, but Carruthers made the saves for Ted, and the score ended 2-0 for Texas.

World Cup Qualifier - Mexico 2 - USA 1 - Estadio Azteca - 27 Mar 2005

This doesn't have anything to do with UT soccer, but if fits here chronologically...  I attended the World Cup qualifier in Mexico City, and despite the loss it was a great time.  Match report here with some crowd photos to come "soon".

ITESM-Monterrey Borreguitas

The weather was perfect for a game, a clear blue sky, with temperatures getting cool as the game started at 7 pm.  Kelsey Carpenter put Texas up early with a strike in the upper corner of the net.  Stephanie Logterman nearly put Texas up by two just afterward, as she pushed forward from the left back and threatened to score.  Logterman has looked very good so far this spring, her control and touch has been great.  Just minutes after that, No. 8 for the Borreguitas nearly answered, but was wide right.  No. 8 was impressive for the Borreguitas, she had several dangerous free kicks in the game.  Both teams had several good scoring chances in the rest of the half, but the half ended 1-0.  Texas continued to have good chances in the second half, and Priscilla Fite and Caitlin Kennedy scored to make the score 3-0 for Texas.  Thirty minutes into the second half, No. 8 finally drew blood for the Borreguitas on a very well struck free kick to make the score 3-1, where it ended.

Nacional Feminil de la CONADEIP - I think this talks about the Borreguitas playing in the Mexican college championship game.

Lonestar Soccer Club

Texas ended their spring season with a 6-1 win this Wednesday, against the Lonestar 88's Soccer Club (a local high school age club team), played in Cedar Park.  (Click on the venue link in the schedule above for directions.)  The Lonestars had a good home crowd in attendance, probably around 350 or so, many of whom seemed to be younger players in the Lonestars system.  The field wasn't the greatest, it hardly had any grass on it, and so the ball took a lot of strange bounces during the game.  Kelsey Carpenter started the scoring with two goals midway through the first half, and Texas added another to make it 3-0 at halftime.  Carpenter kept at it in the second half, adding two more goals early in the half, off passes from Kelly Wilson.  The Lonestars brought the score a little closer with a well-struck header that made the score 5-1, to much rousing applause from the Lonestars faithful.  As time was running out, Texas added a sixth, when Alex Gagarin (playing in the field) finished a header (facer?) for a final score of 6-1 for Texas.
