Thorium was also, until recently, used in most lantern mantles. The fabric was impregnated with a solution of thorium nitrate and cerium nitrate. When burned, this becomes a mixture of thorium oxide (99%) and cerium oxide (1%) which glows with a very intense white light, in the heat of the flame.
